Like all step drill bits, this tool features a conical design with progressively larger stepped diameters, allowing users to drill multiple hole sizes with a single bit. What is Nitriding?

Nitriding is a thermochemical surface hardening process where nitrogen is diffused into the surface of steel at elevated temperatures. For step drill bits, this treatment:
- Creates an extremely hard surface layer (typically 63-66 HRC)
- Improves wear and abrasion resistance
- Reduces friction between the bit and work-piece
- Enhances heat resistance (up to 600°C / 1112°F)
- Provides a permanent surface treatment (not just a coating that can wear off)
The result is a step drill bit that maintains its cutting edge significantly longer than untreated HSS bits, especially in demanding materials like stainless steel and sheet metal.
